Boise and the Environment

For many years, Boise has been an environmental leader, developing quality, resource-efficient products, supporting recycling, and fostering other activities dedicated to improving environmental stewardship. Boise owns no timberland, and we do not purchase wood fibre from old-growth forests. All of our wood fibre procurement systems have been certified to Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standards. And we are actively involved in emerging green building programs.

The UK government's decision in August, 2005, to accept the Sustainable Forestry Initiative programme as proof of timber's sustainability has been welcomed as good news by the building industry. The Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET), which advises government on timber sourcing, said changes recently made by the scheme had now satisfied its procurement requirements on legality and sustainability.

Boise as an individual manufacturer of Engineered Wood Products has gone one step further in commissioning the BRE (Building Research Establishment) to carry out a full Life Cycle Analysis and EcoHomes assessment on our Engineered Wood Products. This is now complete with the results included in the BRE's Red Book and the Green Guide to Specification. As a result of this assessment Boise is now authorized to use the BRE Certification mark on publications related to the Environmental Profiles of BCI Joists.
