Our commitment to the environment
At Boise Cascade, we consider ourselves as stewards of the environment even though we don’t own any forest lands. We rely on natural resources—trees, air, water and energy—to make and distribute our wood products. Through conservation and sustainable practices, we are actively contributing to the responsible use and protection of the natural environment, which benefits our employees, our customers and the communities we work and live in.
What we aim to accomplish
We have a solid record of responsible environmental commitment and performance. We manage our businesses to sustain environmental resources for future generations by:
- protecting air and water quality near our manufacturing sites.
- responsibly using energy and forest resources.
- reducing, reusing and recycling manufacturing and finished product waste materials.
- collaborating with others by listening to and acting on constructive ideas to demonstrate our commitment.
Boise Cascade expects environmental and forest law compliance within all aspects of our business—from our employees to our suppliers.
We use a robust environmental management system with a comprehensive set of policies, procedures and controls to:
- manage the procurement of all forest-based fiber that we use in our wood products operations.
- provide our supply chain with assurances regarding the legal sourcing of fiber, the exclusion of controversial sources, and compliance with resource and trade legislation—including both mandatory and voluntary.
Being able to supply these assurances to our customers gives them confidence that the products they purchase from us support their own responsible and ethical procurement policies. Many of our customers use our products in their own chain-of-custody systems and will request specific, certified-product claims.
Compliance with all forestry laws is further enhanced by our voluntary third-party certification programs that promote responsible management of forest resources to ensure there are healthy forests for generations to come.
Internal and independent third-party audits occur for chain-of-custody programs in all of our wood product facilities and in some of our distribution locations. The locations audited are selected independently by third-party certification organizations.
Audits are performed on an ongoing basis to ensure that we are meeting or exceeding all regulatory and voluntary standard requirements. We share the results of our audits across the company as an opportunity to continuously improve our sustainable forestry program.
Forest management auditing
We annually go through a rigorous series of testing by credible third-party independent auditors to make sure our environmental and forest management programs conform to each of these standards and to determine our level of compliance. Audit results are then published on the websites of the certification programs as well as reviewed internally as part of our continuous improvement process.
Every year we complete a rigorous risk assessment using the fiber sourcing data we track in our environmental management system (EMS), which is a comprehensive set of policies and written procedure to guide our responsible management of fiber procurement. It also includes numerous wood-accounting software tools to specifically track and manage fiber data. All of these components in our EMS controls numerous steps in our fiber procurement processes as part of our risk-mitigation measures.
We also conduct an annual internal review of our due-diligence system and risk-mitigation measures to test their effectiveness. Then, we have an external expert evaluate our mitigation strategy and the awareness of proper procedures by our employees.
Our Environmental Policy states that we will comply with the letter and intent of all applicable laws and regulations, and our environmental management systems ensures compliance is maintained and that we make improvements when non-compliant events occur. We regularly audit our environmental management systems to asses our compliance within the process we have established. The scope of each audit considers all environmental compliance programs over the operating period since the last audit.
Our audit teams are composed of corporate environmental managers, outside subject matter experts, and environmental staff from other regions. Approaching audits this way results in opportunities to benchmark and continuously improve compliance across all of our operations. All deficiencies identified in an audit are corrected and tracked to completion.
We choose to do business with suppliers that share a commitment to preserving our environment. Because our suppliers play an important role in allowing us to maintain our well-respected reputation, we expect them to conduct business in ways that align with our core values and adhere to our Supplier Code of Conduct.
We expect suppliers to:
- comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations.
- conduct their business with concern for the environment and be aware of the environmental impacts from their business.
- identify opportunities for conservation of natural resources and finding ways to reduce pollution and landfill waste.
- ensure products supplied to Boise Cascade do not contain metals derived from “conflict minerals”—tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold, or their derivatives—that directly or indirectly finance or benefit armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (or any adjoining country).
- support the commitments set forth in Boise Cascade’s Conflict Minerals Policy.
