In North America, three standards have attained PEFC endorsement — the American Tree Farm System (ATFS), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Sustainable Forest Management standard (User Group), and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®).
Boise Cascade undergoes independent third-party audits to assure our procurement and chain-of-custody systems comply with the certification standards we participate in. We also audit our own facilities every three to five years to assure they are complying with governmental and our own environmental regulations.
All of these audits are described below.
To assess our sustainable environmental performance, an independent third party audits our wood fiber procurement practices against Sustainable Forestry Initiative® standards and our internal standards. The SFI® program is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives, performance measures and indicators that reflect a commitment to the social responsibility of sustainably managing forests.
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP audited our wood procurement system and found our procurement practices to be in full compliance with SFI standards. Audits are performed on an ongoing basis to ensure that we are meeting SFI standards as well as our own, and that we are continuing to improve our environmental management practices.
To add transparency and enhanced credibility for our customers, we have completed Chain-of-Custody certification at selected facilities. We undergo independent third-party audits against the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® Program Annex 2 Chain-of-Custody Standard and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes™ Annex 4; Chain-of-Custody of Forest Based Products Requirements Standard; the Forest Stewardship Council® Standard for Chain-of-Custody, FSC-STD-40-004 and the FSC® Controlled Wood Standard, FSC-STD-40-005 (Version 2-1) EN.
To assess our sustainable manufacturing performance, our environmental experts audit each of our manufacturing facilities every three to five years. In addition, an independent company periodically evaluates our audit program to ensure its conformance to recognized environmental auditing practices.
