Sustainable Forestry Initiative Policy
Boise is committed to Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) standards in our North American wood procurement operations. We use best management practices that promote and improve sustainable forestry. We also extend these practices to forest landowners from which we purchase wood fiber.
We take our commitment to sustainable forestry beyond the bounds of our operations by encouraging and working cooperatively with our suppliers and forest landowners to broaden the practice. We promote a land stewardship ethic that utilizes a balance of reforesting, nurturing of forest crops, harvesting of trees for wood and paper products, and conserving soil, air, and water quality. We promote the enhancement of biodiversity, visual quality, recreation, and wildlife and aquatic habitats.
To achieve SFI standard goals, Boise has developed a comprehensive set of policies, programs, and procedures to guide its management practices. These documented programs are supported by a regional Evidence Summary and an Evidence File. Our programs work in concert with, and are supported by, applicable federal and state laws and regulations, internal guidelines, and state-defined best management practices.
In support of the SFI program, we have adopted the following set of written polices to guide our programs, procedures, and management practices.
- We promote the practice of sustainable forestry to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
- We promote to our suppliers and forest landowners sustainable forestry practices that are both scientifically credible and economically, environmentally, and socially responsible.
- We promote effective forest regeneration and management practices that maintain the productive capacity of forests.
- We promote the protection of the forests from damaging agents such as wildfire, pests and diseases, to maintain and improve long-term forest health, productivity, and economic viability.
- We promote management practices to protect and maintain long-term forest and soil productivity.
- We promote management practices that provide protection for water bodies and riparian conditions.
- We encourage forest landowners and managers to protect lands of special significance in a manner that takes into account their unique qualities and to promote a diversity of wildlife habitats, forest types, and ecological or natural community types.
- We conduct all operations to comply with applicable federal, provincial, state, and local forestry and related environmental laws, statutes, and regulations.
- We promote continual improvement in the practice of sustainable forestry and will monitor, measure, and report performance toward meeting sustainability standards.
- We implement our policies to ensure that mill inventories and procurement practices do not compromise our adherence to principles of sustainable forestry.
- We ensure that the commitment to Sustainable Forestry Initiative standards is communicated throughout Boise.
- Our operations comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including social laws addressing civil rights, equal employment opportunities, anti-discrimination and anti-harassment measures, workers' compensation, indigenous peoples' rights, worker and community right-to-know laws, prevailing wage laws, workers' right-to-organize and occupational health and safety, and workers' protection standards. For operations outside North America, we document compliance with and enforcement of applicable regulatory requirements.
- Boise is committed to implement the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) Chain-of-Custody Forest Products Standard at designated locations for the purpose of communicating fiber sourcing and certification attributes to our customers. Boise will employ dedicated accounting and fiber tracking systems to ensure accurate information is passed along with our products to customers. Boise will also implement an ongoing control system to test, review, and report the integrity of the data. Boise will utilize a Management Review Process to evaluate effectiveness of our Chain-of-Custody systems and drive continuous improvement.
